Domain Email Services

You have the option of handling your e-mail accounts in different ways
  • Alias Forwarding - Mail comes in to one address then gets forwarded to your existing e-mail address. For example:

           INCOMING     --->     OUTGOING
    sales@yourdomain.com    you@your-real-address.com

  • POP3 Mail - Mail comes in to your e-mail address and is stored on our mail server until you read/delete it. You can access the mail with a unique login/password using either POP3 software or the e-mail features built into your web browser.  We also include web based mail access and also secure mail access.

  • IMAP Mail - IMAP is an advanced mail feature which allows you to store your mail folders on OUR servers.  For most people this is a more secure location and because your mail is backed-up on our servers, you never have to worry about losing all your stored mail after a problem with your PC.  Check here for more details.

  • Web Mail - If you like the flexibility and ease of being able to check your mail from anywhere by using just a web browser -- we can support you with an advanced Web Mail capability.
Reducing unwanted junk mail / SPAM

We have two levels of SPAM/Virus protection available to our subscribers.   For general information on SPAM, Viruses and Firewall, check here.

  • Black List Checks - Our mail server is configured to check some an incoming message against a couple of black-lists of know SPAM senders.  It will reject their mail; however, via your web site control panel we do give you the ability to limit what (if any) checks are done.  The system will also show you what message have been reject.  There is NO charge for this service.

  • Advanced SPAM control - A product called Canit gives your first-class protection against SPAM and offers you a lot of configuration options.  It will also "hold" potential SPAM so that you can read the actual message contents.  Unlike many SPAM control systems, it allows you to know which message are being rejected and why.  It also has capabilities allowing you to whitelist or blacklist specific email addresses or entire domains.  The cost starts at $1/month per individual address of $5/month for an entire domain.  Please click here for full details. The service includes a no-risk 30 day trial period.
 Monthly Pricing of E-Mail Accounts

Each domain account comes with a set number of e-mail addresses which may be stored in POP accounts. You can have as much email forwarded as you desire. Additional POP addresses may be added as needed.  Check our comparison table for current rates.

Setting up your Email Accounts: Incoming POP Accounts and outgoing SMTP

If you are not familiar with POP. This section explains how to setup to receive POP E-mail. Please NOTE: in order to send mail through our servers we do require SMTP authentication (your mail client must login with a valid POP account before attempting to send mail).  For more details on this anti-SPAM policy, check here.   Once you have completed your basic mail setup, you may want to experiment with secure email.  In addition we also support Web Mail for your POP accounts, allowing you to check your mail anywhere.

  • What is POP? - POP, short for Post Office Protocol, is a way to allow a user on a machine which is not always connected to the Internet to receive E-mail.

A machine which is on the Internet always, called a POP Mail server, will take your incoming mail and hold it in an account on the server. Later, at your convenience, you can access the Mail server with special POP mail software. Almost all E-mail programs support POP (like Eudora our Outlook Express), and even your Netscape browser has a built in POP Interface.

When you check your E-mail with POP your machine remembers the last time it got mail from the server, and just asks for mail that arrived since that time.
You should configure YOUR POP software so that mail on the server is deleted after it is read. Accumulated old mail on the servers is periodically deleted at approximately 30 days.

  • What is SMTP? - Simple Mail Transport Protocol is how your outgoing mail is delivered from your computer.  Normally, we recommend you use the SMTP mail server of your current ISP since they are physically closer to your computer, but if your ISP does not allow you to set the FROM address of your email to another domain, you should use our servers.

Our SMTP server is mail2.thebook.com and you will normally connect to port 25.  Our server is configured to prevent unauthorized use by SPAMMERS.  The following rules apply.

    • The FROM address of your outgoing messages must be a domain we host.
    • You must authenticate prior to sending mail.   This normally happens automatically in your mail program.  Just checking for POP mail on our servers will authenticate you.  You MUST have a POP box on our servers that can be checked prior to sending mail.  It is not required that it actually be used for mail, but it must be checked.  You can create a POP box from your control panel with us.

If you violate one of these rules, you will get an error message when you try to send mail.  The message will include the text "relaying denied."   Please check the above to clear the error.

  • How do I use it? - When configuring your POP software here are the common questions you will be asked (along with the answers!). Occasionally we do add hardware and change machine configurations, we will notify you if the "answers" change.

    1. Incoming Mail and/or POP3 Server?
Ans: MAIL1.THEBOOK.COM -- it should default to Port Number: 110

    2. Outgoing Mail and/or SMTP Server?
Ans: MAIL2.THEBOOK.COM  -- it should default to Port Number: 25 (if you have problems sending mail and can't get a connection, you can try Port Number: 587).

NOTE: DO NOT use any type of 'authentication/password' for sending email.  It is not required.  As we said above, we authenticate you automatically when you check your mail. Do not check an encryption, SSL or TLS setting for normal POP mail.   If you wish to use encrypted mail, check here for details.

    3. User Identity -- most mail programs allow you to control what "from" address other people see when you send them an E-mail message.
      Ans: you@yourdomain.com

    4. POP3 Username and/or login?
Ans: This will be information you entered when you setup the mailbox using our POP Wizard from your control panel. Example:

You want incoming E-mail for info@yourdomain.com to be stored in a pop account. The POP Wizard will create the box and give it a name like: "p_your01" and you will specify the password. Some email programs, like Eudora, want: "p_your01@mail1.thebook.com"

    5. POP3 Password?
Ans: The password you assigned for the POP login name, NOT the password we gave you for general access to your web site.

    6. If you have problem sending/receiving after making these settings, please complete some of our firewall tests by checking here.
