Telnet Support & Web ServiceTelnet access is not included as part of our normal web service. It is a utility which can be used by those experienced with UNIX to manipulate files directly on the server. Because of the flexibility it offers it represents a unique security risk to server operations. Many other providers do not support any type of Telnet access because of this; however, we do still support it as an add-on feature.
Telnet access to your site files can be activated at a cost of $5/month, billed as a part of your regular service. If you have signed up for mySQL database service, telnet access is included at no extra cost (just request activation). If telnet is active on your account, you can click here to launch a telnet session. As part of receiving access please pay special note to Security items in our terms & conditions. Please be aware that your activity during a telnet session may be monitored by staff, down to the keystroke level. For existing subscribes effected by this change: We apologize for what will be a rate increase! Current industry best practices label telnet as a real security problem for providers and our experience confirms that. Hackers are growing more and more sophisticated and unfortunately some of those are service subscribers. The $5/month rate does not reflect the cost of providing the service in "computer usage", but represents the cost in special security monitoring it requires. It also allows us to reduce the overall access to telnet services, allowing for much closer monitoring. Click Here to request telnet service.
Telnet access can be turned on/off at the monthly level, there is a minimum fee of $5. This should allow you to complete any special installations. Most of the new Linux distributions do support a dual-boot option, if you just need to do "compiles", we recommend installing Linux on your PC (please check with us for the current version we are running). This will allow you to build an executable and just upload to our servers. |
