WEB SITE INFORMATION - DOMAIN SERVICE

This document contains the information you need to access and maintain your own web site. PLEASE read it carefully!
It has the following sections:

1. Basic Login Info - how to access your web site and our subscriber information system.
2. How To Transfer Files - moving files to your site, viewing via a broswer.
3. Email - how to setup domain email.
4. Web Site Statistics - how to check the activity for your site.
5. Tech Support - what to do if something is wrong.
6. Web Page Suggestions - how to get the most out of your site.
7. SECURITY - read, very important!
8. Billing - Our billing policies
9. Search Engines - Tips on registering your site with search engines

1. BASIC LOGIN INFO
As a subscriber you will use TWO different pairs of login names and passwords. One pair is used when you are changing files at your web site. The other pair is used when you are accessing our Subscriber Information System (which allows you to change your contact address, view your current invoice, use one of our site "wizards", or setup email forwarding for your domain).
1a. WEB SITE ACCESS
Here is your account information, this is normally only used with FTP software:

host: user1.thebook.com
userid: playland  (the first 8 letters of your subscriber name, minus any hypens or periods)
passwd: *********

Note : Telnet access is available at an additional $5 per month as an add-on service. Telnet is included in mySQL access.
1b. SUBSCRIBER INFORMATION SYSTEM ACCESS
This system is accessed from: http://www.thebook.com/control-panel.html, this has a lot of nice features in helping you maintain your site.  Make sure you check it out!

subscriber name: playland
password: <whatever your selected when you submitted your order form>

If you have forgotten, let us know and we can reset to a known value.
1c. TOOLS PAGE
For some extra help and tips, try http://www.thebook.com/tools.  This page provides many useful links! The page is password protected,  the login is: tools, password: hammer

2. HOW TO TRANSFER FILES

The path to the HTML source directory for your site is '/pub/comwww/playland'. This is also your default directory for
login; or, as a URL, 'http://www.playland.com/.  The server looks for your home page by searching for the
following files (in order): index.php4 index.php3 index.php index.shtml index.htm index.html default.html default.htm index.asp

NORMALLY, you would call your home page index.htm or index.html (not home.html or default.html). Please note also, that index.html is NOT the same as Index.html, case does matter. Right now, your "default" page that we loaded is your index.html page.

The index.shtml name is only used for server side include files. See http://www.thebook.com/share_include.html.

The path to your cgi-bin directory is simply '/pub/cgi-bin/playland'.  When wishing to invoke a CGI script use the following path, e.g. <FORM ACTION="/cgi-bin/playland/program-name" METHOD="POST">  Where "program-name" would be replaced by the name of your script.

You can use any FTP program to transfer your files into your new directory. Remember that the path to your website's directory is "/pub/comwww/playland". This will put everything in the right place.  MAKE SURE you set binary mode before transfering image files.  If you need FTP software, try our page: http://www.thebook.com/pub_ftp.html. When configuring your FTP software the host address of our FTP server is: USER1.THEBOOK.COM

You should now be able to see the new files using your browser!

By default, any file you upload to your website will inherit the correct permissions. However, if you upload any CGI scripts, you may need to reset the permissions.

Cute FTP: Right click on the file, and choose "Change File Attributes."
WS_FTP : Right click on the file, and choose "chmod (UNIX)".

For html and graphics files, select

owner: read + write
group: read
public: read

For CGI scripts, select

owner: read + write + execute
group: read + execute
public: read + execute

DO NOT set write access to group or public because this allows ANY  user on the system to write and make changes to your files.

Finished!

Now, using Netscape or any other browser, click on Open, and type in the URL "http://www.playland.com". There should be your new Web site!

If there are any questions, please let us know!

3. DOMAIN E-MAIL
Your domain service allows you to receive E-mail as: some-name@playland.com, where "some-name" is replaced by whatever you want, e.g. :

webmaster@playland.com,
sales@playland.com, or
info@playland.com.

You can have as many of these types of addresses @playland.com as you want. Your incoming mail that is directed to any of these  addresses will actually arrive on our mail server, and will be forwarded to your REAL address, i.e. the one used to receive this message.

An alternate method for handling your incoming e-mail is to have it stored in a POP mailbox on our server. This is particularly useful for those who want to keep their web site E-Mail seperate from their personal E-Mail. Our POP mail server allows such a person to read his/her mail with the use of special POP mail software.

You may setup your DOMAIN E-mail by using the subscriber information system at: http://www.thebook.com/control-panel.html.  The Control Panel allows you to specify your incoming and outgoing E-Mail addresses.

Check our web site for more details regarding domain E-mail.   http://www.thebook.com/domain-email.html

If you wish to have your outgoing mail show your from address with your domain name (e.g. some-name@playland.com), just configure your mail program appropriately.
4. WEB SITE STATISTICS
Complete statistics for your site are available on a daily basis and can be accessed using your web browser by visiting the URL: http://www.playland.com/.logs

IMPORTANT!!! These statistics are your most valuable resource in maintaining your web site. Check the following link for an "annotated" version, http://www.thebook.com/play_index.html

Current month statistics are updated daily, and at the end of each month the results are saved for your future reference. At your request these  statistics can be placed under password control so that only you can access the page -- just send us an email message with the password you desire.
5. TECH SUPPORT
We have CGI "wizards" to help even a novice install custom forms, page counters, or forums on your site. There is also a tools that will allow you to verify that all your hyperlinks are good. Check our Subscriber Information page at
http://www.thebook.com/control-panel.html.

Software Workshop, overall hosting and consulting services. Contact us with general questions about page layout/operation/cgi-scripts.  You can reach us as: "service@thebook.com" or via phone at: (315) 635-1968.

PLEASE NOTE: Our pricing and tech support is for supporting webmasters experienced in HTML and CGI programming in a UNIX environment. The sheer volume of sites we support prohibit us from answering "how to" questions on HTML, or debugging problems with CGI scripts you may be attempting to install on your site. If you are a web "novice", you may want to consider ordering our custom support service: For $40 you are given two hours of help from one of our staff engineers during your first month of service. This is normally sufficient to setup CGI forms to handle simple ordering, page counters, etc... and get your site in operation!
6. WEB PAGE SUGGESTIONS

FOR TIPS ON HOW TO CREATE AN EFFECTIVE WEB SITE:

1) Check out our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, http://www.thebook.com/faq.html
2) Visit our special subscriber tools page. Has links to numerous sites along with collections of graphics you can use on your
pages. http://www.thebook.com/tools

WHEN CREATING IMAGES FOR YOUR PAGE WE RECOMMEND:

  1. 1. Reduce the image to only 256 colors (8 bit color).
  2. 2. Reduce the image to only 72 dpi (the resolution of most monitors).

You will find this will make a DRAMATIC difference in the size of your files, without reducing overall image quality -- your mileage may vary!

WHEN PREPARING YOUR FILES:

  1. Small web pages (<10k) are more effective then large, never-ending pages. A good strategy is to divide your site into several small pages logically linked together. Most WWW surfers use slow modems and will stay away from sites that are difficult to load.
  2. Avoid path names in your local HTML file links and image references. For example, if you link from one file to another, it should appear as: <A HREF = "otherfile.htm">...</A> instead of  <A HREF="/otherfile.htm">...</A> or <A HREF="C:\windows\web\otherfile.htm">.  The exception is if you are actually linking to a file within another
sub-directory e.g. you reference a file as <IMG SRC="image/picture.gif">  and have a /pub/comwww/yourdirectory/image" directory. The link tag tells the browser which file to load and where  to look for it. Be careful - a link may appear fine when testing it  on your local computer but then stop working in the new server environment directories!
  3. MAKE SURE ALL FILE NAMES AND REFERENCES TO FILE NAMES ARE ALL LOWERCASE. Filenames and directory names are sensitive to OUR UNIX Web Server. Case sensitivity is the difference between upper  and lower case letters. For example, "FILE.HTM", "File.htm", and "file.htm" are 3 separate files. Linking incorrectly will result  in a non-working link.
  4. The same holds true for image references. A broken image will appear if you want to display "Picture.gif" and the actual filename is "picture.gif".
  5. DO NOT USE ANY SPECIAL CHARACTERS SUCH AS THE '#' OR '%' OR '~' IN THE FILENAME. STICK TO LOWER CASE LETTERS, NUMBERS, AND A UNDERBAR ('_').
We hope this helps you manage your domain. If you have any questions or would like additional help, please contact us.
7. SECURITY

System security is VERY important. You are sharing this equipment with other users, and poor security practice on YOUR part can effect EVERYONE on the system. Some RULES we have (these MUST be followed or your account may be IMMEDIATELY terminated, with loss of both service and any payments you have made).

  1. As discussed in Part 1, you have two passwords. DO NOT make these the same. DO NOT make these the same as your domain name or user name. Your password should consist of 7-8 characters, with  at least ONE character being a numeric digit,e.g. bim88bam
  2. The directories you have access to are:  /pub/comwww/playland for HTML and /pub/cgi-bin/playland for CGI scripts.
You are free to create subdirectories, but DO NOT attempt to access other areas of the system. When using FTP software you will not be able to see any directories underneath: /pub/comwww OR /pub/cgi-bin -- that is NORMAL, just use your entire path as specified above and you will be fine.
  3. You are ONLY allowed to execute system commands directly related to maintaining your web site. Any attempt to execute other system administration commands is a VIOLATION of security guidelines.
  4. If you are not sure if your attempted action is allowed, contact service@thebook.com FIRST.
8. BILLING
Invoicing is done via E-Mail. It is company policy for us to require a $5 charge for invoices to be faxed or sent out by U.S. Postal Mail.  PLEASE make sure your contact E-Mail address with us is current. You can use the Site Control Panel,
http://www.thebook.com/control-panel.html  to review and update your address information.

The Company runs a "tight" billing procedure and one of our most common problems is users getting web sites deactivated for non payment. Much of this information is in our terms & conditions, http://www.thebook.com/terms.html.

The easiest way to avoid any interruptions in service is to authorize us to charge your CC for renewal fees. We still send you an invoice so you are aware of the charge.
9. REGISTERING WITH SEARCH ENGINES
Most major search engines allow you to manually add your URL to be indexed. Just visit each search engine and look for a link that says "Add URL." You can also submit your site to search engines like AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, InfoSeek, and WebCrawler by going to http://www.submit-it.com. Submit-it.com offers a free service to register with approximately 7 search engines. Additionally, for a yearly fee, you can register with 400+ search engines and directories, as many times as you want. We only recommend submit-it.com because  they offer one of the best submission services. You are free to use
any submission service you choose.

Your site's rating with the search engine depends primarily on the contents of the <TITLE> and <META keywords> tags of your HTML documents. However, each search engine uses different criteria when rating your site. Useful information about search engines can be  found at http://www.searchenginewatch.com.
